Lease Ending Soon? You May Have More Options Than You Think

Many drivers believe they must return their leased vehicle to the exact dealership where the lease started. In many cases, that may not be true.

Depending on your lease agreement and the vehicle brand, another authorized dealer of the same brand may be able to help you with your lease-end process. This can include reviewing your lease return, checking your vehicle’s current market value, discussing possible equity, offering trade credit, or helping you move into your next vehicle.
For example, Ford Canada states that customers may return or purchase their lease through an authorized Canadian Ford dealer, while GM Financial Canada says returning through the original dealership is recommended, but customers can contact a local GM dealership to schedule a return.
Why This Matters
Your leased vehicle may be worth more than its remaining buyout amount. When that happens, you could have positive equity. Instead of simply handing back the keys, it may be worth asking a dealer to appraise the vehicle and review your options. Industry sources note that lease equity can sometimes be used toward a new vehicle purchase or lease.
Possible Lease-End Options
At the end of your lease, you may be able to:
Return the vehicle
Buy out the lease
Trade the vehicle toward another vehicle
Use possible equity as trade credit
Compare offers from another authorized same-brand dealer
Ontario’s vehicle sales regulator, OMVIC, also notes that lease-end choices can include returning the vehicle, buying it, or leasing another vehicle. Extra charges may apply for excess wear and tear or mileage.
Before You Decide
Before returning your leased vehicle, check:
Your lease agreement
Buyout amount
Mileage
Vehicle condition
Brand-specific lease return rules
Whether another authorized dealer can assist
Some leasing programs may have restrictions, so it is always best to confirm directly with the leasing company or an authorized dealer.
